Race one halted by red flag

An accident at the first corner of the opening World Superbike Championship race at Monza has brought a halt to proceedings after it eliminated five riders.
Two separate accidents occurred in the funnel into the right-left chicane, after Makoto Tamada appeared to clip the back of Brendan Roberts’ Ducati. With Tamada down, Roberts ran off the circuit and slid off, his errant bike sliding into the path of the pack and swiping out Max Neukirchner, who had entered the corner in the lead.
Eliminating the three riders immediately, just behind Tommy Hill and Troy Corser were two more to fall at the opening bend, giving race directors no choice but to bring out the red flags.
Race One:
The opening race started with a terrible crash that saw five riders lying on the asphalt. Makoto Tamada and Brenden Roberts initiated it all when they wound up in the grass after contact that caused both riders to crash. From there, things got worse as Roberts' Guandalini Ducati skittered across the track, the bike pegging Alstare Suzuki's Max Neukirchner. The German rider went down in a heap and suffered a broken right femur. Tommy Hill and BMW's Troy Corser also crashed and a fire broke out. At that point the red flag was shown resulting in a lengthy delay.
When the race restarted, Nori Haga took off with the lead before being passed by Ducati Xerox teammate Michel Fabrizio. Back in third was Ben Spies who was leading Alstare Suzuki's Yukio Kagayama and Aprilia's Max Biaggi.
On lap five Ben Spies found himself in the lead, shadowed by Haga and a slowing Fabrizio. However, Fabrizio found his rhythm, soon passing Haga and motoring up behind Spies. The two riders touched on lap 16, but the American held sway. Spies looked to be headed to victory, but then, inexplicably, ran out of fuel that took the soul out of his R1. He’d finish 15th while Fabrizio raced by to claim the first win of his career. Haga second and the Aprilia of Biaggi was third
(Note: Biaggi, the Roman, was later penalized 20 seconds for cutting one of the chicanes, dropped Biaggi down to 11th and Ten Kate Honda's Ryuichi Kiyonari was placed upon the podium.

(http://eurosport.yahoo.com/)Race Two
The second race at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza started with Fabrizio grabbing the holeshot, but his lead would not last long as Spies shot right to the front and would out-and-out disappear to win the 18-lap race by 2.665 seconds.
Spies’ primary championship rival had a terrible second race, the Japanese rider suffered a poor jump off starting the line and completed lap one in 15th place, and soon after, Nori crashed diving into the Parabolica right, his Ducati F09 tangled in the catch fence.
With Haga out of the picture, Fabrizio and Ten Kate Honda Racing's Ryuichi Kiyonari fought over second. Fabrizio led up to lap seven, but was passed by Kiyonari.
The Italian fought back, racing back into second on lap 12 and holding second to the finish line stripe with a 0.145 second gap.
Five seconds later and in fourth came Hannspree Ten Kate Honda's Jonathan Rea and Aprilia's Max Biaggi. Spies' teammate Tom Sykes placed sixth. Following him home was Stiggy Racing Honda’s Leon Haslam. On the second Stiggy Racing Honda CBR1000RR and in 20th was American WSB rookie Jake Zemke.
Between Spies’ triumph and Haga’s misfortune, the Texan was able to kick a small dent in championship leader Haga’s World Championship point lead. Haga leads the way over Spies with 200 points, while Michel Fabrizio slots in at third with 125 marks.
