The most interesting facts, figures and statistics ahead of the second round of the 2010 MotoGP World Championship at the Jerez circuit in Spain.
200 – Valentino Rossi’s win in Qatar made him just the third rider to reach the milestone of 200 point scoring finishes in Grand Prix racing. The only other riders to have achieved this are Loris Capirossi and Alex Barros. 171 – Shoya Tomizawa’s victory at Qatar in the first ever Moto2 race was the 171st victory for Japanese riders across all solo classes of Grand Prix racing. This means that Japan as a nation have now won just one Grand Prix less than the USA. 41 – The number of riders starting the first ever Moto2 race, which is the largest grid for a intermediate class Grand Prix since the 250cc West German GP in 1988 at the Nurburgring circuit when 48 riders lined up on the grid. 34 – On the day of the Spanish GP it will be 34 years ago to the day that Barry Sheene won the 1976 Austrian GP from Marco Lucchinelli and Phil Read in the first all Suzuki podium in the 500cc class. 23 – Jorge Lorenzo will be celebrating his 23rd birthday on the Tuesday following the Spanish Grand Prix. 4 – The first four riders across the line in the 125cc race in Qatar were all from Spain. This is just the second time that Spanish riders have filled the top four positions in a Grand Prix race across all classes. The previous occasion was in the 125cc race in Germany last year when a Spanish rider also finished in 5th place. 1.876 seconds – At the Qatar GP, Nicky Hayden in 4th place, crossed the line just 1.876 seconds after winner Valentino Rossi, making this the closest top four finish since the introduction of the 800cc capacity limit at the start of 2007. It also goes into the record books at the tenth closest top four finish of all-time in the premier-class, in a Grand Prix that has completed full distance.

Johnny Rea took home victory for the HANNSpree Ten Kate Honda team at Assen, after shaking off a pack of pursuers with a couple of laps to go. Rea was outdragged off the line by Troy Corser on the BMW and Leon Camier, who stuffed his Alitalia Aprilia through into 2nd into the first turn. Corser and Camier led from Rea for the first couple of laps, before the Ulsterman started working his way forward, passing Camier on lap 6 and chasing an unleashed Troy Corser.
Behind Rea, Pata S&G's Jakub Smrz was starting to push Leon Camier, while James Toseland had clearly fixed the issues that had troubled his Sterilgarda Yamaha all weekend, and had charged through from 10th on the grid to fight his way up to 5th. Toseland was compressing the front five from 5th position, the front group tight, assisted by Troy Corser whose pace was starting to tail off. Smrz squeezed past Camier into 3rd, but four laps later, James Toseland barged his way forward into 3rd, bumping Smrz and Camier back a place each. A lap later, and Camier was past Smrz and back into 4th, diving up the inside going into the first turn.
Two laps further on, and Johnny Rea had finally worked his way past the BMW of Troy Corser. Not to be outdone, Toseland followed, elbowing Corser aside going into the GT chicane. Another lap on and Camier was also past Corser round Assen's flowing southern section, and Corser was effectively out of contention, forced to allow Carlos Checa past, but holding off Max Biaggi to the line.
Toseland used the next couple of laps to close hard on Rea, diving through to take the lead into the chicane with three laps left to go. Rea responded immediately, diving back into the lead at the Haarbocht, dumping the Yamaha man wide and creating a gap. Rea then pushed hard for the finish, and crossed the line with a small but comfortable gap to take the win. James Toseland held off Leon Camier, who had got back on Toseland's tail after Rea had passed the Yamaha back for the lead. Carlos Checa crossed the line an impressive 4th, while Troy Corser held off Max Biaggi for 5th.
Championship leader Leon Haslam suffered a painful blow to his title lead, going backwards in the early part of the race to drop down to 16th spot, before leading a fight back to eventually finish 11th. The Alstare Suzuki rider did get a little lucky, though, with chief title rival Max Biaggi only closing by 5 points, and Carlos Checa gaining just 8 points. Haslam finished not far behind Xerox Ducati's Noriyuki Haga, who he had spent much of the race battling with in a big group scrapping over 10th spot.

Johnny Rea completed the double at Assen today, taking another solid victory after a breathtaking race. BMW's Troy Corser once again got the holeshot, leading Alstare Suzuki's Leon Haslam and the Ten Kate Honda of Johnny Rea into the first corner. Within a couple of corners, Rea was past Haslam, and for a few moments, it looked like Haslam could suffer a repeat of race 1, when low pressure in the front tire slowed the Suzuki rider badly. But by lap 2, with Haslam still fully in the running, it was clear that the problems had not reappeared.
The race quickly turned into the kind of fully-blown spectacle that World Superbike rounds at Assen so quickly turn into. By lap 6, a freight train of 8 riders had formed, consisting of Rea, Haslam and Corser, along with the Alitalia Aprilias of Leon Camier and Max Biaggi, the Althea Ducatis of Carlos Checa and Shane Byrne, and the Sterilgarda Yamaha of James Toseland, who was storming through the field once again.
A dogfight developed for the lead, with Troy Corser and Johnny Rea swapping the lead early, before Leon Haslam barged past Rea at the GT chicane at the halfway mark, and then Corser at the same place a lap later. Corser tried seizing the lead on the way into Turn 2, Madijk, but Haslam slammed him aside, sliding back into the lead a corner later. Rea followed Haslam through a few corners later, sliding through at the Stekkenwal to take over 2nd.
This was the signal for all hell to break loose, with the passes getting more brutal and more daring as the race wound down. Corser passed Rea on the entry into the new Ruskenhoek, an audacious pass at high speed, but Rea was straight back as the heeled over left for the Ruskenhoek proper. Behind Corser, Leon Camier bundled under James Toseland at Mandeveen, but Toseland was having none of it, and was back by the next corner.
At the front, Johnny Rea bust past Haslam and back into the lead at the Haarbocht, a move which Haslam reciprocated again at the Ruskenhoek, copying Corser's adventurous example. Not to be outdone, Rea took on Haslam at Hoge Heide, the fastest and scariest part of the track. Rea's reward was short-lived, though, as Haslam was back again at the GT chicane. Turn 1 saw Rea get back again, and this time, he made it stick on the Alstare Suzuki rider.
The two had now opened a gap back to the battle for 3rd, which was now big enough to leave them unthreatened. Rea put the hammer down for the last five laps, pulling out nearly two seconds over his fellow Briton Haslam, to secure his double victory for the HANNSpree Ten Kate team.
Rea's and Haslam's breakaway was assisted by the bickering which was going on behind them. Aprilia's Leon Camier and Yamaha's James Toseland were scrapping hard over the final podium place, an argument which Camier seemed to have settled in his favor, until a mistake saw him run wide, touch the astroturf on the outside of the Meeuwenmeer, and send his bike tumbling wildly through the grass. Camier's error handed Toseland third place, his second podium of the day, and far more than he had expected after a very mediocre Superpole. Max Biaggi got past Troy Corser to take 4th, with Carlos Checa edging Jakub Smrz for 6th.
A technical problem for Noriyuki Haga saw the Japanese rider's hopes of a title become yet more distant, while Michel Fabrizio's 12th place finish completed a miserable weekend for the Xerox Ducati team.
Haslam's 2nd place saw him extend his title lead over Max Biaggi to 20 points, while Johnny Rea leaps up into 3rd place in the championship, 38 points behind the leader Haslam.

Stoner dominance rolls on with top spot in qualifying Saturday, 10 April 2010
For the second consecutive year Casey Stoner will start the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar in pole position, as he attempts to win the race for the fourth season running.
Casey Stoner’s strength at the Losail International Circuit was evident once again in qualifying practice on Saturday evening, as the Ducati Marlboro rider posted a best lap of 1’55.007 to place himself in pole position for the start of Sunday’s season-opening race.
Having won the floodlit race from pole position last season the Australian will begin his 2010 title challenge with great confidence, as he beat his qualifying time from 2009 by over two-tenths of a second. Reigning World Champion Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha) was second fastest in the hour-long qualifying with a time of 1’55.362, as he ensured his title defence will begin from the front row of the grid in Losail. Rossi’s Fiat Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo looks to be in good shape despite some lingering concerns over his fitness due to the hand injury he sustained in pre-season. Any such questions were answered with a strong display that had been hinted at in practice, as the Spaniard timed in at just over half a second off Stoner’s pace to complete the front row.
Heading up the second row for the inaugural race of 2010 will be Randy de Puniet. The LCR Honda rider’s progression throughout the weekend continued with a best time of 1’55.831, putting him in fourth position and making him not only the fastest Honda on the starting grid but also the highest placed private rider.
Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) will start his record-breaking 300th Grand Prix from fifth place after his late surge also produced a leap in places. The veteran, with a time of 1’55.899 on his GSV-R, was ahead of fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda). His team-mate Dani Pedrosa – who had struggled to find his pace during free practice – managed to step his level up as he posted a time of 1’55.990 to take seventh spot.
Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech3) and Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro) took eighth and ninth fastest respectively to join Pedrosa on the third row, with 250cc World Champion Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP) finding a last-minute time to complete the top ten and find himself as the highest placed rookie.
Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech3) finished 11th, and there were crashes for Mika Kallio (Pramac Racing) – 12th – and Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) – 15th – inside the opening 10 minutes of the session. Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) also had a fall, after he had set his best time which will see him start his first MotoGP race from 13th position.

Saturday, 10 April 2010 The Ducati Marlboro rider is again the fastest in the second MotoGP practice session in Qatar, ahead of Valentino Rossi and Randy de Puniet.
Casey Stoner was the quickest rider of the MotoGP field as he led the timesheet once more in the second practice session of the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar on Saturday. The Australian’s time of 1’55.501 was only one-thousandth of a second slower than his best lap in the previous practice, as he displayed a consistency that will have placed him in a quietly confident position heading into qualifying.
The Ducati Marlboro rider led for the majority of the hour-long session, and was over three-tenths of a second faster than World Champion Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha). The Italian posted a time of 1’55.841 as he improved on his time from Friday, and was the only other rider to join Stoner under the 1’56” mark.
Randy de Puniet was the highest placing Honda rider on board his RC212V of the LCR Honda team, as the Frenchman shaved almost 0.7s off his best time from the previous evening with a 1’56.350, whilst Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) was again fourth as he kept track of De Puniet at just two-tenths behind.
Jorge Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha) was inside the top five at just over a full second off Stoner’s pace, with Mika Kallio (Pramac Racing) another rider to make a notable improvement as he took his Ducati round in the sixth best time of the session.
Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech3) and Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) were seventh and eighth respectively, with Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) making a much-desired if only marginal improvement as well to place ninth. Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech3) completed the top ten.
Rookie Héctor Barberá (Páginas Amarillas Aspar) had a slow-speed fall with just under ten minutes of the session remaining, and returned swiftly to the track to complete his practice ahead of this evening’s qualifying session, which is due to start at 10.55pm local time.

Stoner on the pace as Qatar gets 2010 MotoGP season underway
Friday, 09 April 2010 Ducati Marlboro rider Casey Stoner started the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar weekend as the leading MotoGP rider, setting the fastest time of the first free practice session.
The first day of action at the opening round of the 2010 season concluded on Friday evening with Casey Stoner the quickest MotoGP rider under the floodlights of the Losail International Circuit. The Australian is seeking his fourth successive win at the track this weekend, as he bids to get his title challenge off to a winning start by carrying over his form from the final pre-season Test.
Stoner’s time of 1’55.500 on board his new Desmosedici GP10, resplendent with its new big bang engine, placed him just over half a second ahead of the rest of the 17-strong field, as he displayed his strength at the desert track and ensured he was the only man to get under 1’56” barrier. Stoner set his time on the ninth of 17 laps, the fewest completed of all the riders.
Jorge Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha), who admitted prior to the weekend that he may not be at full fitness as he continues to recover from a hand injury, showed no signs of hesitance as he set the second best time of the hour-long session. The Spaniard’s best lap of 1’56.026 came right at the end of the practice, and just before he had a fall which did not appear to cause him any problems.
His team-mate, reigning World Champion Valentino Rossi, was third on the timesheet on board his factory M1 prototype. The Italian, who will aim to get his title defence off to a winning start, timed in at just two-thousandths of a second off his colleague Lorenzo.
Andrea Dovizioso of the Repsol Honda team took his factory RC212V round in the fourth best time. The Italian, who finished last year’s race in fourth place, was just over a second off Stoner’s pace with a time of 1’56.698, and it was Stoner’s team-mate Nicky Hayden who made the fifth spot at just under a tenth of a second behind.
The highest-placed rookie was Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech3) as he showed further signs of taking to the premier class well in sixth spot, with fellow newcomer Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) on the GSV-R the final rider under 1’57”.
Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda), Mika Kallio (Pramac Racing) and Héctor Barberá (Páginas Amarillas Aspar) were all inside the top ten, with Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) 11th. The 2009 third-placed Championship rider continues to struggle on his factory bike, and was over a second-and-a-half off Stoner’s pace as he lapped at 1’57.133.
Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech3) followed, and Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) was 13th. The veteran Italian had a crash with 20 minutes of the session to go, but returned to the track to set his best time, ahead of Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team), Aleix Espargaró (Pramac Racing), Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) and Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP).

Ducatis dominated the first qualifying session for the World Superbike class at Valencia, with 6 Ducatis finishing in the top 8. Althea's Carlos Checa was fastest again, as he had been during FP1, with Pata's Jakub Smrz and Checa's Althea teammate Shane Byrne in 3rd. Max Biaggi was the first of the non Ducatis, ahead of the leader in the title race Leon Haslam. The factory Xerox Ducatis follow, Michel Fabrizio leading Noriyuki Haga, with DFX Corse's Lorenzo Lanzi rounding out the top 8.
